I visited Waireinga Bridal Veil Falls in 2025 and in the process discovered a well-known but under-rated waterfall that is truly majestic and accessed along a beautiful bush walk beside a tranquil stream. For landscape photographers seeking breathtaking natural beauty, New Zealand offers an abundance of stunning locations. Among these, the Waireinga  Bridal Veil Falls near Raglan stands out as a true gem. This guide will equip you with all the essential information to plan your photographic expedition to this magnificent waterfall, ensuring you capture its ethereal charm.
GETTING THERE: Your Journey to Waireinga Bridal Veil Falls
Bridal Veil Falls is conveniently located within the Waireinga Scenic Reserve, a short drive from the vibrant surf town of Raglan. Its accessibility is one of its many appeals, with well-maintained roads leading directly to the carpark. From Hamilton, the journey typically takes around 45 minutes via State Highway 23. If you're coming from Raglan, expect a picturesque 15-minute drive covering approximately 12-15 kilometres.
To reach the falls from Hamilton, take State Highway 23 and turn left onto Te Mata Road. Continue along Te Mata Road before turning onto Kawhia Road. The falls are clearly signposted from the turn-off, making navigation straightforward. Upon arrival, ample parking is available, and facilities such as picnic areas and toilets are conveniently located at the top of the falls.

THE WALKING TRACK
The walk to the falls is an experience in itself. An easy 10-minute stroll leads you to the upper viewing platforms. For those keen to explore further and capture diverse perspectives, a series of approximately 260 steps descends to the base of the falls. While the descent takes around 20 minutes, allow a more leisurely 30 minutes for the climb back up, appreciating the lush native bush along the way.
ESSENTIAL CAMERA GEAR for Capturing the Falls
To truly do justice to the grandeur of Bridal Veil Falls, selecting the right camera gear is paramount. The 55-meter cascade demands specific equipment to capture its full beauty, from the delicate flow of water to the expansive surrounding landscape.
Wide-Angle Lens: A wide-angle and/or mid-range lens (e.g., 16-35mm or 24-70mm) are  indispensable. These allow you to encompass the entire height of the falls and the dramatic basalt cliffs, providing a sense of scale and immersion. A mid-range zoom (e.g., 24-70mm) can also be useful for isolating specific sections or creating tighter compositions.
ND Filters: Neutral Density (ND) filters are crucial for achieving the signature silky-smooth water effect often associated with waterfall photography. A 6-stop or 10-stop ND filter will enable longer exposures, transforming the rushing water into a soft, ethereal blur, reminiscent of a bridal veil.
Tripod: Given the often shaded conditions within the gorge and the necessity for long exposures, a sturdy tripod is non-negotiable. It ensures sharp images by eliminating camera shake during extended shutter speeds.
Lens Cloth: The sheer power of the falls can create a significant amount of mist and spray, especially at the lower viewing platforms. A good quality lens cloth will be invaluable for keeping your lens clean and free from water droplets.
DISCOVERING the BEST PHOTO LOCATIONS
Bridal Veil Falls offers multiple vantage points, each providing a unique perspective on this natural wonder. Exploring all three main viewing platforms is highly recommended to fully appreciate and photograph the falls.

The Upper Viewing Platform: Located just a few minutes into the track, this platform provides a commanding view from above. It's an excellent spot to capture the full height and the distinctive horsetail shape of the falls as they plunge into the punchbowl pool below. This perspective is ideal for wide, sweeping landscape shots.

The Middle Viewing Platform: Often cited as a favourite among photographers, the middle platform offers a beautifully framed view of the falls. The surrounding native bush creates a natural leading line and adds depth to your compositions. This viewpoint allows for a balanced perspective, showcasing both the power of the water and the lush environment.

The Lower Viewing Platforms and Bridge: Descending to the base of the falls brings you face-to-face with its raw power. From here, you can truly feel the spray and hear the roar of the water. The lower platforms and the bridge provide opportunities for dramatic close-ups, emphasizing the force of the 55-meter drop. Experiment with different angles from the bridge to capture the stream leading into the falls.
