Upper South Island & Kaikoura Landscape Photography
The Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman region is a place with an incredible variety of New Zealand landscape types within an easy drive of each other incorporating three National Parks (Kahurangi, Abel Tasman and Nelson Lakes). Magnificent beaches, snowy mountains, beautiful farm vistas, vineyards with hill backdrops, and incredible lakes - this region has something for every landscape photographer.
Further south on the east coast the Kaikoura landscape reveals itself - a land of rugged beaches and towering mountains seemingly right next to each other.

Some Detail about Upper South Island Landscape Photography
Two trips to the Nelson, Marlborough region in 2024/5 brought me to the incredible St Arnaud, Lake Rotoiti at sunrise, and through both the Marborough and Nelson regions over a number of days. New Zealand landscape photography opportunities in the Nelson Lakes abound - at Lake Rotoiti a water taxi service will take you to the head of the lake where there are magnificent walking tracks and the beautiful Whisky Falls. While in this area a trip to Lake Rotoroa is only a few kilometres away for another stunning lake location. However, don't forget this is also a region of beautiful beaches - at sunrise the Janie Seddon Shipwreck makes for a great landscape photography subject, Wharariki Beach and the reflections from the Archway Islands, Split Apple Rock at sunset and multiple beach locations in the greater Golden Bay and Tasman National Park. You'll be spoilt for choice in the region with Wainui Falls worth a visit and only a 1 hour return walk on a Department of Conservation track. And for water as pure as the driven snow visit Pupu Springs (Te Waikoropupu) or the Riwaka Resurgance - you'll be amazed.
Further east Marborough is vineyard country with vineyard rows back dropped by golden hills in summer. This is a dry region with some of New Zealand's highest sunshine hours.
The dry persists down the upper east coast heading to Kaikoura. Here is where the mountains are so close to the coast that at some points they seem to rise straight out of the ocean - this provides the opportunity to capture images with snowy mountains and coastal strips all in the one image. And the sea life in the region is something to behold- Sperm whales, dolphins, and seal colonies. Take in the Kaikoura foreshore at sunrise on a clear morning when the early morning light cast itself across the mountain range close by. Kaikoura is a magical place and a visit here will not disappoint.
