The Tongariro Crossing is an iconic New Zealand world renowned 19 kilometre walk that takes you to the base of Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings movies) and across Tongariro before descending through mountain beech and podocarp forest. Lake Taupo, the North Island's largest lake, also has a volcanic underbelly with serene water and sunset photo locations.

Some Detail about Tongariro National Park & Taupo Landscape Photography
What a stunning landscape photography location the Tongariro National Park is. The Park is home to three significant volcanoes - Mount Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. Mount Ruapehu, North Island's tallest mountain at 2797 metres is an active volcano boasting unimpeded, awe-inspiring views that stretch all the way to the coast. Its remarkable alpine terrain is crowned by a crater lake found at the summit, a tapu (sacred) site revered by the local iwi (indigenous Maori tribes) in the area. This crater lake holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for the indigenous communities, adding to the mountain's profound significance.
Mount Ngauruhoe also has recent fame for being in the Lord of the Rings movies as Mount Doom.
The Tongariro Crossing hike attracts visitors from around the world to take in the views of Mount Ngauruhoe from its base and from the Crossing walk summit. Red Crater, Emerald Lakes and North Crater add to the mix before descending through mountain beech and podocarp forest. The landscape photography opportunities are endless - Tama Lakes, a 4-5 hour return walk, Waitonga Falls on Ruapehu's southern slopes, sunset views from Turoa ski field carparks, and night sky photography under a black velvet carpet sprinkled with stars. Make the time to visit you will be awe-inspired.
And let's not forget Lake Taupo to cap off this unbelievable region - the Taupo Tree and Huka Falls being two notable photographic sunset locations. Then if time allows a trip to Blue Duck Station on the shores of the mighty Whanganui River has its own New Zealand Landscape Photography rewards, especially the most serene Kaiwhakauka River Gorge plus the views from the hilltops back to Tongariro National Park.
