INTRO
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a New Zealand Landscape Photographer’s dream which thousands of hikers traverse each year. And it’s easy to understand why this is the case as the volcanic landscape of old lava flows, craters and volcanic cones are literally out of this world.
Most hikers will complete The Tongariro Crossing in daylight hours starting at the Western end of the track in the Mangatepopo Valley and descending to the Northern End of the track past the Ketetahi Springs. It is a magical day hike.
However, to experience the amazing light that casts across the volcanic landscape at dawn you will either have to camp near The Tongariro Crossing summit overnight or undertake a night-time climb to reach the summit before dawn Blue Hour commences. In fine weather this will give you the opportunity to capture a famous photo and the environment will make you feel like you are standing on top of the world. I completed this climb under the light of a Full Moon on a calm, fine, cloudless summer night - the sense of being close to nature in these conditions and in such an environment was both powerful and humbling - a memory to cherish.

Route Overview from Mangatepopo Valley Carpark to the The Tongariro Crossing Summit (and return)
Mangatepopo Valley Carpark to the summit near Red Crater is a rise in elevation of approximately 765 metres (2510 feet) on a well-formed and marked track with extensive boardwalks. The typical hike duration is 6–8 hours return however, due to dark conditions, visibility issues and photo stops the hike may take an extra 1-2 hours. Note the Mangetepopo Valley Carpark has a 4 hour parking limit and it is advisable to contact the DOC information centre on the day prior to your climb to check if leaving your car in the car park overnight will be possible.

Key sunrise photography locations are near Red Crater (1886 m), at the Crossing Summit, where you will have an uninterrupted panoramic view of Mount Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro, Emerald Lakes, South Crater and the Central Plateau across the Desert Road.
Other NZ Landscape photography locations over the whole hike are too numerous to list however of note are the various views you will have of Mount Ngauruhoe, South Crater northern rim looking back toward Mount Ngauruhoe, and extensive views to the west on your descent back to the Mangatepopo Valley Carpark during early morning light.

Safety Considerations
The Tongariro Crossing is an alpine environment where conditions can change rapidly at any time of year. This environment can be lethal if not given due respect when poor planning and poor preparation is in play – if you are considering doing this hike, in either day or night conditions, then ensure you are aware of the hazards, plan accordingly and ideally hike with at least one companion.
Unless you are a skilled alpine guide or mountaineer a night-time climb to The Crossing Summit should only be attempted during Summer months (December to March) with a clear high-pressure weather system and calm winds.

Key Hazards
- Strong alpine winds, especially on exposed ridges.
- Rapid weather changes — clear skies can turn into snow or rain within minutes.
- Volcanic gases near Red Crater, Te Māri vents and Emerald Lakes
- Slippery terrain — loose scree, ice, or frost pre-dawn.
- Isolation — few others on the track at night.
- Trips and Falls – the track is in good condition and well maintained, however, there are many steps and steep slopes – take care to watch your step to avoid falling over.
- Dehydration and Energy Depletion – take ample water and high energy snacks with you.
Safety Actions
- Check “Mountain Forecast – Tongariro” before departure and only attempt this climb if the conditions are favourable.
- Carry a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) — particularly required for solo or night hikes.
- Never attempt in high winds (>50 km/h), icy conditions, or active volcanic alerts (check DOC alerts).
- Leave a detailed plan with someone reliable (route, start time, expected finish). And check out the tramping safety details on the DOC website as part of your planning.

Camera Gear for Night–Sunrise Shooting
Camera - Full-frame (Sony A7CR is perfect) for low-light capability or other similar
Lens - Wide fast prime or zoom – I took my Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens and if you are happy to carry extra weight then a longer focal length zoom would be great to capture close up images of Mount Ngauruhoe summit.
Tripod - Carbon-fibre, sturdy but lightweight
Headlamp with red light - Preserve night vision
Remote shutter / intervalometer - For long exposures and timelapse
Extra batteries - Cold temps drain them quickly plus a spare memory card
Lens cloths / air blower - Frost or condensation is common in low pre-dawn tempertures
Optional - ND or graduated filters for post-sunrise shooting

TONGARIRO NIGHT HIKE UNDER FULL MOON & SUNRISE PHOTOGRAPHY PLAN
11:30 pm — Arrive & Prep
Drive to Mangatepopo Carpark (end of Mangatepopo Rd).
Check conditions (temperature, wind, cloud base).
Layer up: base + fleece + shell; keep puffer for later rest stops.
Confirm PLB, route, and headlamp ready.
Eat a light meal or high-energy snack before starting.
12:00 am — Start Hiking
Begin up the Mangatepopo Valley Track.
The first section is gradual, boardwalks and lava flows — easy night navigation.
Keep your pace steady, save energy for the Devil’s Staircase.
Use low headlamp brightness (or red mode) to preserve night vision.
2:00 am — Soda Springs Area at the head of the Mangatepopo Valley (rest stop)
You’ll reach the end of the easy valley walk (4 km) but don’t take the left fork to soda spring rather follow the track to the right and up to the Devil’s Staircase.
Short rest, drink, and snack here.
Check wind strength — above this point it becomes exposed.
Layer up before ascending.
2:10 am — Begin the Devil’s Staircase
Climb steeply toward the South Crater (elevation gain approximately 300 m).
The climb is rocky but well-marked — take it slow and steady.
Expect cooler temps and stronger wind toward the top of the Devil’s Staircase.
3:30 am — South Crater Plateau
Flat basin between Ngauruhoe and Tongariro — surreal in moonlight.
This is a great astro or moonlight stop with silhouettes of both volcanoes.
15 min rest, hydrate, eat a bar.

4:00 am — Climb to Red Crater Ridge
- Begin ascent from South Crater to the Red Crater ridge.
- Path becomes steep and loose — use trekking poles if you have them.
- Expect wind gusts and keep warm layers handy.
- Use care with footing on the scoria surface.
- Congratulations — this is your primary sunrise location.
- You should arrive roughly 45 min before sunrise, just as nautical twilight begins.
- Set up tripod and camera gear.
Sunrise Photo plan:
- Blue-hour bracketed exposures of Emerald Lakes below.
- If lucky, low mist in the valley will glow at first light.
- Mount Ngauruhoe catches the first rays — telephoto shot (70–200 mm) looks amazing.
- Capture wide landscape compositions with Red Crater foreground and Ngauruhoe in frame.
- Bracket exposures or use soft graduated ND filter.
- Stay low to avoid wind shake as needed
After sunrise Golden Hour
- Warm glow on the Emerald Lakes; great for texture and reflections.
- And if you are wanting an extended time on the summit area then take a return walk to Blue Lake - take in the dramatic view back to Mount Ngauruhoe from the Blue Lake location, but note this could add 1-2 hours to your hike.
7:30 am — Begin return journey to Mangatepopo Carpak - Descend to South Crater
- When in South Crater take a side walk up to the Northern end of the crater away from Mount Ngauruhoe and photograph the view back toward Mount Ngauruhoe. The northern area of South Crater has large groups of rocks that make for an interesting foreground together with a composition of Mount Ngauruhoe
10.00 - 10:30 Arrive Mangatepopo Carpark
