Taranaki Landscape Photography
Towering and majestic, Taranaki Maunga (mountain) dominates much of the New Zealand landscape photography of this region. Rewarding photographic locations for capturing the maunga from near lakes, rivers, streams and a Lighthouse are there for all to find and enjoy. Taranaki is not only the maunga but also a region with rugged surf beaches, rain forests, waterfalls and coastal outcrop stacks. The wide-spread diversity that this region offers is all within a short drive from the urban hub of New Plymouth.

Some Detail about Taranaki Landscape Photography
In clear weather Taranaki Maunga is revealed in all its glory. This a dormant stratovolcano and at 2,518 metres is the second highest mountain in the North Island, after Mount Ruapehu. It has a secondary cone, Fanthams Peak at 1,966 metres, on its south side.
The Taranaki weather is notoriously changeable, with conditions ranging from clear skies to heavy cloud cover and snow, even in summer. The region is often buffeted by the prevailing westerly winds so picking your time to capture clear skies and calm conditions in this region is a must.
To my good fortune I have visited Taranaki in calm, clear conditions and the photographic rewards are astounding.
The Pouakai Tarn walk with the magic reflection of the maunga in the tarn at sunset followed by the stunning night sky in this dark sky location makes for beauty that is something to behold.
Taranaki photo locations are numerous with some of the favourites being numerous views of the maunga itself from road locations and more - Cape Egmont Lighthouse about an hours drive down the coast from New Plymouth, Hangatahua or Stony River in a similar location, Tongaporutu (The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock) north of New Plymouth, Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. And then there's Back Beach and Paritutu, and Dawson Falls
Taranaki landscape photography is a dream come true and I encourage you to visit the area to experience the unbelievable Taranaki Maunga and the magnificent New Zealand coastline photography opportunities that abound in this region.
