Northland is a region of warmth and diversity blessed with stunning beaches and coastal landscapes, rolling farmland, waterfalls, native forest and massive sand dunes . Northland stretches from the top of New Zealand North Island to the Auckland region. Auckland has a population of 1.7 million people (April 2025) making it New Zealand's largest city. The city region is an area with a multitude of fantastic landscape photography locations on both the west and east coast and among the volcanic cones upon which the city is built.

The Northland and Auckland region spoils you with magnificent coastlines and sweeping beaches mixed with fantastic waterfalls such as Whangarei Falls. The far north at Cape Reinga is very special with a view to the north beyond New Zealand and the wild mix of ocean currents that swirl around this northern point. It's quite a drive to make it this far north, however the rewards are worth the drive with Te Paki Sand Dunes a must see. Other locations of note include the Waipoua Forest with it's huge kauri trees, Matapouri, Matauri Bay, Matai Bay, Piha and beaches on Auckland's west coast and the often missed beaches on the South Auckland, Maraetai coast - a great location for sunrise landscape photography.
Venture to any of these locations or to others such as Muriwai's Gannet Colony, the impressive surf at Bethells Beach, city views of Sky Tower, and east coast beaches with Rangitoto in the background - you will not be disappointed as you capture the essence of this region in your New Zealand landscape photography.
