The Grasmere Experience: A High Country Retreat
Grasmere Lodge (originally established in 1863 as Hawdon's Station) is more than just a place to stay; it is a living testament to New Zealand’s high country history. Perched at an elevation of 700 metres, the Lodge and adjacent farm buildings are some of the highest permanently occupied buildings in the region. The lodge seamlessly blends its heritage roots with modern luxury, offering spacious rooms with private ensuites and the self-contained three-bedroom Riverview Villa is perfect for larger visitor or photography groups.
The Information Booklet available in each of the Lodges rooms will provide you with a history of the area and the farm, an extensive summary of available walks (both long and short), special sites to visit, and information about the numerous bike trails in the area - if you need further information don’t hesitate to check in with the Lodge staff - they’re always happy to help.
During your stay at Grasmere you'll be treated with the most sumptuous meals derived from a sustainably practiced farm to plate experience. The resident chef is well renowned and the cuisine at Grasmere is World Class - the meals and hospitality will be just another reason you'll be itching to return to this amazing lodge.
The station itself spans 3,300 acres of alpine flats and rugged hill country. Surrounded by sweeping golden tussock plains, braided rivers, and towering alpine backdrops, the lodge itself feels like a scene straight out of a classic New Zealand landscape photograph.
The architecture reflects its surroundings - timber, stone, and warm tones - making it a strong photographic subject in both soft morning light and dramatic evening conditions. The interiors are equally photogenic, with large windows framing the mountains beyond and providing opportunities for environmental storytelling shots.
Whether you are capturing the first light hitting the peaks or the quiet elegance of the homestead, Grasmere Lodge and the surrounding area provide a wealth of alpine compositions.

PHOTOGRAPHIC OPPORTUNITIES: The Lodge & Surrounds
The immediate surroundings of Grasmere Lodge offer a wealth of subjects for the discerning eye. The architecture of the historic homestead, combined with the newer accommodation buildings, provide excellent opportunities for architectural and lifestyle photography.
Photography Tip: Use a wide-angle lens (16-35mm) to capture the lodge buildings against the scale of the mountains, but keep a telephoto (70-200mm) handy for capturing the details of the farm animals and the textures of the high country hills

- The Gardens & Alpenglow: The lodge gardens are designed to frame the mountain backdrop. In the early morning or late evening, the peaks catch the "alpenglow," a soft pink or orange hue that creates a magical atmosphere.
- Farm Life in Focus: As a working high country station, Grasmere is home to a variety of animals. From the noble Clydesdale horses, Red deer and Highland Cattle to the more exotic Alpacas and Ostriches, there is no shortage of wildlife and livestock subjects.
- The Riverview Villa: Situated to overlook the Waimakariri River valley, the villa offers elevated perspectives of the braided river systems and the vast alpine landscape.

PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATIONS
The Wider Area: A Photographer’s Playground
Grasmere Lodge serves as the perfect base for exploring some of the South Islands iconic photography locations.
CASS RAILWAY STATION
Just minutes away lies Cass Station, one of New Zealand’s most photographed railway stations. Immortalized by Rita Angus’s famous painting, the small, iconic station set against the towering mountains is a must-shoot.
Best Timing: During middle of the day hours when the sun is casting across the eastern and northern faces of the Station Building – this changes through the seasons – my visit in late May required a photo shoot during late morning to early afternoon. At this time of year the building is still in shadow in the early part of the day and after approximately 2pm the sunlight direction had moved to the rear of the Station Building.

VALLEY VIEWS
The road immediately south of the entrance/turnoff to Grasmere is a straight stretch of highway that runs to the top of a hill terrace just past the southern end of Lake Grasmere. Views of the road, surrounding countryside and distant ranges from both the bottom and the top of this stretch of road are fantastic. These views can result in rewarding images with strong leading lines provided by the road itself and the adjacent fencelines
Best timing: Any time of day with Golden Hour potentially providing the best light conditions. SAFETY - In these road locations safety is paramount as you will be in a high speed traffic environment and care needs to be taken to ensure you know the position of any vehicles before taking your shots – and a passenger should be with you to act as a traffic lookout while you position yourself ready to take your shots.

THE LAKES
Lake Grasmere & Lake Pearson (Moana Rua)
These lakes are legendary for their mirror-like reflections. Lake Pearson, in particular, is a favourite for its calm waters and the way it perfectly duplicates the surrounding peaks.
Best Timing: Early morning is essential for the calmest waters and best light although sunset in calm conditions can be equally rewarding.

CASTLE HILL
Cave Stream Scenic Reserve and Castle Hill (Kura Tawhiti) Limestone Outcrops
A short 20 minute drive south from Grasmere brings you to Cave Stream Scenic Reserve - one of the most outstanding natural features in the Canterbury region. The cave stream has chiselled its way through ancient limestone rock to form a cave stream exit that is an unbelievable circular formation. The short cave system can be traversed but take heed of the information and warning signs in the reserve before venturing into the cave exit or entrance.
And another 5 minute drive south past Castel Hill Village will take you to the giant limestone formations of Castle Hill. These ancient rocks offer endless compositional possibilities, from wide-scale landscapes to intimate detail shots of the weathered stone. It’s no wonder this location was chosen for scenes in The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings.
Best Timing: Golden hour to capture long shadows cast from the rock formations amongst the golden tussock grasses and night-time for Astro Photography.

From Grasmere to the west on the road to Arthurs Pass, the landscape becomes even more dramatic. Highlights include:
- Avalanche Creek Falls Situated adjacent to Arthurs Pass Village is a beautiful cascading waterfall. Walk on the southern side of the road opposite the Café and just east of the village store up a small access road - literally a two minute walk will bring you to a small arched stone bridge where the lower part of the falls can to viewed and photographed.
- Devil’s Punchbowl Falls: A spectacular 131-metre waterfall reached via a short, well-maintained track. The track starts at the western end of Arthur's Pass village, just off SH73 at the Punchbowl car park (signposted off the highway). From the start of the walk follow the footbridge across the Bealey River. The next bridge, over Devils Punchbowl Creek, has a good view of the waterfall. From here, wander through lush beech forest with friendly fantails (pīwakawaka) and tomtits before climbing 150 m up a series of steps to a viewing platform at the base of this spectacular waterfall.
- Otira Viaduct: An engineering marvel that provides a dramatic foreground for mountain photography, especially in moody or misty weather. The Viaduct Lookout is a short 6.3km drive west of the Arthurs Pass Village along State Highway 73.
Best Timing: Fine weather at any time of day.

- High Country Birds: Look for Oystercatchers and Banded Dotterels near the lake edges, and keep an ear out for the bell-like calls of the Tui and Bellbird in the forested areas together with the South Island Fantail, Rifleman, Robin, Weka and more.
THE NIGHT SKY: A Celestial Gallery
