Some Detail about East Coast & Wellington Landscape Photography
Te Mata Peak has to be one of Hawkes Bay's best sunrise locations with passing clouds and magical light . The vineyards also provide landscape photography opportunities and beaches south of Hastings, such as Waimarama, provide additional sunrise and sunset magic. And if you want to venture further afield then take a trip to Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony - the world's largest and most accessible Gannet Colony providing great photo opportunities.
Rugged coastlines, towering lighthouses, wind farms and urban vibe are all part of the Wairarapa and Wellington scene. Castle Point Lighthouse and the surrounding beach are a landscape photographers gift from heaven, with spectacular views - located near the village of Castlepoint in the Wellington Region of the North Island, Castle Point Lighthouse is the North Island's tallest lighthouse standing 52 metres above sea level and is one of only two left in New Zealand still lit by the original rotating fresnel lens. At night the Lighthouse is lit by varying coloured lights making an eerie sight from the beach and at sunrise the photographic magic happens with a multitude of photo locations and beach reflection opportunities. If you need more Lighthouse exposure then head to Cape Palliser on the southern coast. Here you will find The Cape Palliser Lighthouse, constructed in 1897 - a prominent feature of the area and known for its traditional red and white stripes and long access staircase.
In the Wellington region the southern coast with Red Rocks reserve provides sweeping coastal views and, on a good day, views to the South Island. Venture a little up the west coast from Wellington and the Kapiti sea front provides exceptional sunset photography locations. The prevailing westerly wind also makes this area home to some of the country's largest wind farms and they provide their own special New Zealand photo opportunities, especially at sunrise and sunset.
