Some Detail about Aoraki Mount Cook Landscape Photography
Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is an area like no other - towering mountain peaks, New Zealand's longest glacier, mountain fed rivers that flow to magnificent glacial lakes and an alpine environment of great diversity. Aoraki Mount Cook, Aotearoa New Zealand's highest peak - surrounded by mountain peaks of magnificent grandeur, makes for vistas and landscape photography opportunities that will leave you breathless. The sunset and sunrise possibilities in the region are legendary with views of the mountains from numerous locations being a landscape photographer's dream. As an alpine region the weather can be fickle and change quickly which means a clear day is a gift and time to get that camera out.
Some of the locations to note - Lake Pukaki reflections on a calm, clear day, road shots aligned with Mount Cook and other peaks on the drive in to the Park, Hooker Valley Walk to the Hooker Glacier terminal lake, Sealy Tarns and Mueller Hutt.
Of special note is Tasman Lake at the foot of the Tasman Glacier - at 23.5 kilometres long, this is New Zealand's longest glacier, despite shrinking considerably from the 1990s onwards. In places it is approximately 4 kilometres wide and 600 metres thick, and lies entirely within the borders of Park. Excurions by helicopter are available onto the glacier where incredible New Zealand Landscape Photography opportunities exist.
In late Spring the lupins bloom creating beautiful combinations with the mountain landscape and as this is a dark sky area astro photographers are blessed with mind blowing night skies when the heavens clear.
